1. First, locate the applications you wish to open from Investigator, and create a shortcut (or alias) for each. In the example below, we are creating a shortcut to the application Case It v5.exe, the simulation used to analyze DNA and protein sequences. For the Windows operating system, hold the right mouse button down and select "Create shortcut" as shown below. (For the Macintosh, hold the Control key down when you click the application, and select "Make alias" from the pop-up menu). The shortcut is shown in the graphic to the right below.

2. After creating the shortcut, drag it inside the Case It Investigator folder as shown below. Note in the graphic below that a shortcut has also been created for WINWORD.EXE, the filename for the Microsoft Word application, and dragged inside the Case It Investigator folder.

3. Next, open the file "add applications.txt" in Word or another word processor. This file is located inside the Case It Investigator folder. Type or copy the exact name of the shortcuts into this file, as show below, then save the file as a simple text file. It will be read by Investigator as it opens, so make sure you close the file in Word after modifying it (Windows programs cannot reference a file if another program is currently using the file - this is not a problem on a Macintosh). Also, make sure you save the file as a simple text file, not some other format such as Word format.

The next time Case It Investigator is opened, it will read the above text file and add these two items to the list of applications in the menu. Note in the example below that an instructional message was also added.
