1. First, locate the the text file called "add caseit resources.txt", (located inside the Case It Investigator folder), and open it in Word or another word processor. Note that two lines are associated with each entry: a name that will appear on the pop-up menu, followed by a URL associated with that name. Edit and save the text file, and the revised menu will appear the next time Investigator is started.

2. Hierarchical menus (i.e., menus with submenus) are also possible. To demonstrate how this works, locate the the text file called "add internet resources.txt", (located inside the Case It Investigator folder), and open it in Word or another word processor. This file has been opened int the screen shot below, and we have scrolled down to the bottom of the file.
3. To create hierarchical menus, first enter a topic name on one line, followed by a line with at least one space immediately below it. In the example below, the word "Health" is the topic name, followed by a blank line containing some spaces (see the graphic at right, which shows the same file with the invisible characters made visible). Then, enter pairs of menu names/urls and use the TAB button to tab them over once, as shown in the example below. Any lines tabbed over will appear as submenu items under that category name. The "add caseit resources.txt" and "add internet resources.txt" files can have up to 320 lines each, so theoretically you could add lots of URLs to both of these files.
IMPORTANT NOTES: --The text files must have an even number of lines (name on one line, URL on the next, or topic name, line containing blanks on the next) or the menus may not work properly. -- Save files as simple text files, not in some other format such as Word document format. --If you do edit these files in Word, make sure you close the file in Word before attempting to run Case It Investigator, or you will get an error message (this is not a problem if you are using a Macintosh). --Do not change the names of the files "add caseit resources.txt" and "add internet resources.txt", or Investigator will not be able to read them. The letters in these filenames must be all in lowercase. |
